Artist Statement
: Fantastic Views
These photos are meant to disrupt our ill-founded, innate trust we have for images (and the American Dream).
On a personal level, I work to expand my own notions of how I treat both experience and performance (or at least the supposed documentation of a performative act). My individual ideologies and sense of humor is very present in each picture. They are very personally coded images. The visual metadata contained within carry the messages and ask the questions I feel are most relevent to the time and place when the images are made. Experience + Intellectualization = Idea (or a photo in this case). Put most simply, I try to represent the little day dreams that happens when I am looking around.
Magic.
These fantastic little stories are all made to emphasize this central point. Images are nothing but magical little fictions, bookmarks for a time that has long passed. The real currency is in the experience of actually being somewhere, seeing, smelling, touching and listening to the world. Our reality is intrinsically linked to a specific time and place, but unfortunately so are images. Herein lies the confusion for people (and for myself).
So this is my supposed record, my visual mind's journal; bookmarks for my lost moments of visual acuity. My personal goal is to confuse my actual reality with these implied experiences as much as possible. Truth be told, I hope to someday forget the difference.
Process Statement
All of the imagery is made using large format slide film, scanned then many times digitally manipulated. Many times not. This visual guessing game of 'real' versus 'fake' is precisely where I want my viewers.
